Support Chess Mates
Why support scholastic chess? We believe that enriching experiences in the early childhood positively contribute
a great deal to children's emotional and mental development. The game of chess offers is one of such experiences.
Chess Mates offers young children an opportunity to engage in a positive, mentally engaging activity at a time when
many working parents are not yet home. Chess helps children develop critical thinking and creative problem solving
skills. Students learn about discipline and concentration, train their memorization skills and learn to deal with the
disappointment of a loss. For many of them chess club is also an important place to socialize with their peers.
Almost 900 elementary school students from Seattle area public schools attend Chess Mates weekly
chess clubs during this 2011-2012 school year. More than 20% of those students are eligible for free or reduced lunch
programs in their respective schools. Each participating school has a volunteer chess club coordinator or a group of
supporting parents helping with logistics of organizing and running a chess club. Many parents contribute their time
and effort to Chess Mates tournaments and other events. Some of our chess instructors are themselves former Chess Mates
students!
In addition to weekly after-school classes, Chess Mates organizes tournaments, simultaneous exhibitions and other
special
events. Students from participating schools are able to attend such events free of charge or for a nominal fee.
